NBC Christmas Gift Guide 2012

There’s a plethora of gift guides going on out there, on every blog and in every magazine. But I decided to add my own to the mix and here it is. If I’ve missed anything great, do add it to the comments section.

weleda_gift_skin_food

Stocking fillers (under £5)

Weleda body washes set (£9.95) – buy them, split them and share the love.

Figs & Rouge tinted lip balms (£4.99); they’ve made them tinted and in tubes! If they’re anything like as good as the original balms in tins, then we’re onto a winner. Mocha orange gets my vote.

LUSH Popcorn lip scrub (£5.25); Evelyn at We Were Raised by Wolves raves about this stuff.

Weleda crackers (from £4.95); you can choose the mini rose or pomegranate body lotion but Skin Food gets my vote.

Meerkat tweezers (£2.99); spotted these on British Beauty Blogger. They’re ridiculous but they made me smile.

Mohdoh (£5.10); Aromatherapy meets play-doh. I’m fascinated by this idea. Choose from a range of colours and essential oils. My money’s on Mohdoh ‘Calm’. It’s like aromatherapy worry beads.

For those who want to try something new

Dr Hauschka’s mini rose trio (£8.95) – Rose Day Cream (5g); Rose Body Moisturiser (10ml); Rose Body Oil (10ml)

Pai Limited Edition rosehip 3-step facial gift set (£30); contains Pai’s rosehip mask and facial oil, along with a muslin cloth. Rosehip oil is truly amazing and Pai does one of the best.

Jurlique body cream trio (£17.95); three fragrances – rose, jasmine and unscented lotions with a jojoba oil, shea and cocoa butter base.

REN’s Moroccan Rose experience gift set (£32); 100ml Moroccan Rose Otto Body Wash, 100ml Moroccan Rose Otto Body Cream, 30ml Moroccan Rose Otto Ultra-Moisture Body Oil and 30ml Moroccan Rose Otto Bath Oil. So everything really will be smelling of roses…

L’Occitane have some great offers on their gift sets. I highly recommend the Almond and Shea ranges.

Madara A Touch of Magic gift box (£18.50); a bargainous 50% off from a great range. Includes hand cream, lip balm and night cream.

Sophyto daily skin essentials collection (£31.85); try it, love it, buy more. Includes the Purifying silken cleanser and pH Optimising Restorative toner that I loved and reviewed here.

24-days-of-christmas-large2

£££ – if money is no object

Buddha Nose therapy gift box (£50); contains a sugar scrub, balm and aroma spray from a brand new to Naturisimo. I’m a sucker for an unusual name and can’t wait to try this out.

Aromatherapy Associates ultimate bath and shower oil collection (£50); nine minis across the range. I bet each one smells diVINE.

24 Days of Christmas with Liz Earle (£100); oh how I want this. Let me count the ways.

bodhi_essential_body_set

For the boys

Bodhi essential body care gift set (£20); includes two bath and shower gels, a body moisturiser and a face flannel in ‘man-friendly’ scents like rosemary and mint.

Green People St Nick’s skin tricks for men (£8.95); a body wash and moisturiser with a mint and eucalyptus fragrance. According to the world of cosmetics, men really like their minty smells…

vanilla_chai_311x321_p523jpg

For the belly

Pukka herbal teas (from £2.25); wholesome and good for you but also special and somehow decadent. This time of year blends like vanilla chai and revitalise (packed with cinnamon, cardamom and ginger) are warming and indulgent.

If you know any health food nuts, try making them a ‘shaker’ jar. You need an airtight jar (IKEA do some good value ones), some pretty ribbon for decorating it and a load of assorted seeds and dried fruits. Chuck them in the jar, shake it up and there you go. A great way of adding a healthy kick to easy to prepare foods. For a salad shaker try mixing sunflower seeds, linseeds, pumpkin seeds, hemp and pine nuts. For a breakfast shaker try dried raisins, dried cranberries, dried chopped apricots, linseeds, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds. Julian Graves or Holland & Barrett are your best bet for foodstuffs as there’s usually an offer on somewhere.

MOO5-Message-in-a-bottle-updated-pic-251

For the heart

Personalised message in a bottle (£19.99) – I loved this idea from thetruthaboutbeauty, although I suspect you could mock it up yourself for a bit less money.

neom_home_scenting_gift

For the nose

NEOM Home Scenting gift set (£50); includes a reed diffuser, scented candle and pillow mist scented with lavender, jasmine and Brazilian rosewood. £50 is quite steep but you get what you pay for with NEOM. And you can get more budget options by buying pieces individually, or opting for a travel candle priced at £15.

Have a bath a day with Lavera’s Body spa magic bath salts box (£9.99). Includes rose, orange, lime, honey, lavender and coconut for a bathing scentsation.

For anyone interested in dabbling in aromatherapy, there’s a great offer on a starter kit from Quinessence at the moment. Get 12 oils for £34.99 and it will arrive with a free wooden storage box, worth £13.99. I use quinessence oils and can vouch for their quality, plus delivery is usually pretty speedy and FREE!

A greener, more ethical Christmas: the alternatives

Christmas is a difficult time for those trying to live a greener or more ethical life. Rampant consumerism, the frenzied accumulation of new things and enough wrapping paper to cover the Millenium Dome a few times over doesn’t always sit so comfortably. Natural beauty gifts are a lovely way to spoil someone, support small-scale businesses and to introduce your nearest and dearest to an alternative approach to skincare – you can see my natural beauty Christmas gift guide here. But, given that my homemade gift guide is postponed till January due to spoiler alerts, I thought I’d offer up some slightly more non-traditional Christmas presents.

Ethical gifts get a bad wrap (ha! – couldn’t resist, ‘scuse the pun) but it is possible to get something a bit different without necessarily buying a goat. Not that I have anything against goats, you understand. As environmentally-friendly lawn mowers they’re hard to beat…

Must have gifts from World Vision will allow you to buy a goat but that’s just for starters. You can also buy farming tools, vitamins, education, safe drinking water and, at just £6, a mosquito net – the perfect alternative stocking filler.

Save the children offers another wide range of alternative gifts including toys, art sets and baby kits.

Another good website for things that are a little bit different is Good Gifts. They offer options for both the UK and abroad, so if you fancy a gift based a little closer to home you can pay for singing lessons in a primary school to help disadvantaged kids improve their communication and language skills, or help plant a meadow of spring flowers to support bees and butterflies.

If you want to give something you can wrap up and put under the tree (good luck with getting the goat to stand still for long enough), then you could try fairtrade. Increasing numbers of organisations in the UK offer a route to market for local producers across the globe.

Traidcraft offers a lovely range of gift options. I recommend having a good browse of the site but I thought I’d feature a couple of things that caught my eye:

Fairisle Alpaca mix scarf from Peru (gloves and hat also available) £25

Little Ellie shopper from South Africa - £16

Printed brass bangle from India - £6

Lip balm trio (Orange, Mint and Grapefruit) containing fairtrade ingredients from Palestine, Nicaragua and Burkina Faso, amongst others - £8.55

And presents don’t have to be 100% new to be great. If you’re buying for a fashion lover, try somewhere like TRAIDremade, an offshoot of fashion charity TRAID, where used garments are made into completely new clothing at a workshop in Brighton.

Bag that used to be a jacket?? (£29.50)

Book lover? You could browse Oxfam online for an unusual second hand title with a bit of character. Not everyone likes something used but I rather love holding something with a bit of history imprinted in the pages. Part of the story’s in the book, part is in idea of who read it before you did and why.

Paris Sketch Book 1868, a collection of stories and articles about Paris – £19.99

Images from The Floating World - Japanese Prints, 1978 - £24.99

And if you’re really stuck for a greener option, there’s always regifting. Just make sure you don’t give a present back to the person who gave it to you!

It’s a bit harder to save paper when you’re wrapping for 100. To ease the green guilt, make sure you buy recycled paper and then recycle it in turn. Even better (and greener) is recycled brown paper. Sounds austere, looks surprisingly stylish, especially tied up with string and a sprig of holly from the garden. And if you want inspiration from someone with far greater crafting skills than mine, I strongly recommend that you check out Laura Howard’s Bugs and Fishes for a gorgeous collection of gift-wrap ideas. Now if I can just persuade Laura to pop round and wrap my presents for me…

Christmas gift guide 2011

There’s a wealth of options out there for the natural beauty lover this Christmas. So I thought I’d do a bit of the legwork for you. Plenty of things fit in more than one category – I’ve tried to point this out where relevant:

For lovers of all things Indian, this one might not stick around long. (£17.50, was £35)
  • How about making a ‘shower bouquet‘ by combining Naked’s bargain shower gels with a bit of christmassy greenery and a big red bow? £10 for the 4. There’s also a lot of great value minis available on the site which would make good stocking fillers and a new range for kids.

  • Liz Earle – you can search by price, type, use the gift finder, or browse the beautifully-presented gift guide
  • There’s a neat little gift finder on Apostle, plus the offer of beautiful gift wrapping for the time poor…

And finally…the best of those that didn’t fit neatly in the other categories!

  • Neom Organic Bath Indulgence set, £15 (five mini 5ml bottles comprising the entire Neom bath oil range)
  • Know a rose lover? Try Dr Hauschka’s Wholly Roses gift set, £18.95 (contains rose body moisturiser, rose body oil, rose body wash and rose day cream)
  • I’m not sure whether I’m doing this for me or for you (I would LOVE something from this site btw…) but True Grace make the most beautiful candles and have a lovely website to boot. The candles are separated into two main fragrance groups: the Manor (darker, richer fragrances – my personal pick would be Library, which promises the hint of aged leather!) and Village (the lighter, fresher, floral and fruity scents, including the amazing sounding Forest Air which promises a forest walk on an autumn day), telling such a wonderful story along the way. Everything will come beautifully boxed so wrapping paper is optional. Prices start at £13.

I also owe you all an apology. I was going to do a homemade gift guide in a week or so but I had a bit of a ‘duh’ moment yesterday and realised that I’d be spoiling a few people’s surprises if I posted pictures of their Christmas presents all over the internet. So I’m going to save that one till January. Too late for Christmas but most people are in need of presents year round, so I hope you don’t mind too much!

And to finish off, if you know any natural beauty lovers, you could do worse than recommend the Natural Beauty Cabinet blog to them this Christmas…..! Year round natural beauty tips. Now what could be better?? (Tongue now lodged firmly in cheek! ;-) )

Good luck with the Christmas shopping!

Green beauty & financial management: PART 2 – Samples, trials and testers

Continuing with the theme set by my previous post of ‘value for money’, it seemed only right to consider samples. Personally, I think they’re an integral part of getting the best value for your hard-earned pennies. Few of us can afford more than one or two buys that just aren’t quite right. Organic and natural fans in particular need samples to help them decide on the best products for them. A lot of us have gravitated towards natural products and ingredients because of chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea or allergies. The wrong product may be more than just an expensive mistake; it could mean a lengthy recovery from a reaction.

Discovering that I was allergic to orris root (extracted from the iris and a common allergen) taught me some hard lessons about the importance of patch testing. It taught me to be careful about ingredients and to do my research. But it also taught me that all that could have been avoided if I’d just tried out a sample. I would have been looking for a reaction and I would have picked up on it far quicker. Mistaking an allergy for an eczema flare-up was fairly catastrophic in the long run. As my skin got more irritated and started to dry out, I applied more and more moisturiser to compensate. It was only when I started to question how localised my reaction was that I realised my moisturiser might be to blame. Took my skin at least 2 months to get back to normal. Horrid.

So that’s two good reasons for getting hold of a sample before you commit to a new buy. And many companies are catching onto this; particularly those that have launched more recently. I always feel more favourably inclined towards companies who offer samples. It demonstrates a certain degree of confidence. “Have this, because we’re sure you’ll love it and you’ll be back for more”. Even paid samples are welcome. I’d far rather sacrifice a few pounds on something that isn’t right and I’m always pleased when companies have taken the time to consider the need for ‘try before you buy.’ And the samples don’t need to be big either. 1-2ml is enough to establish whether or not you’re likely to react to something, even if it’s not quite enough to assess long term effects.

Here’s a list of some of the examples I’ve found. It’s not exhaustive but it’s duplicated in the new ‘Shopping and samples’ page, which I will update with new discoveries and any recommendations that are passed to me along the way.

Victoria Health - although they don’t offer product samples as standard, there are occasional gems so it’s worth keeping an eye out. Recently, an £8 sample pack of NUDE Skincare products was added free to every order placed in June. See my NUDE review here.

Escentual - these guys are great for samples. They don’t offer them all the time but their ‘Try before you buy‘ page has a rolling selection of very generous sample packages from some of their key brands. They usually also work out free as the charge levied against the samples is offset by an equivalent value voucher that can be redeemed against a full size purchase from the line.

Aromatherapy Associates – with each order, you can add three free samples from a selection provided.

Herbfarmacy – Excellent samples service where you can choose a sample of most of the products available for the face. Each one will set you back 75p, although you are limited to one for each product available.

Liz Earle – Offers a range of great Try me Kits that enable you to buy mini versions of most of the products in the range, packaged by routine or theme. I’ve also had a lot of success getting samples from Liz Earle counters in the past. I have a troublesome scalp and while I was really excited about last year’s haircare launch, I still wanted to try it first. They had lots of generous samples available behind the counter and were happy to offer advice on which conditioner I should opt for as well.

BotanicalsSamples and try me kits are available. Some are postage only (just £1.95) while the more generous facial skincare trial sets are priced at £7.95. Although this seems a reasonable deal when you realise you’re getting two 5g pots and two 5ml bottles.

Neal’s Yard Remedies – Like Liz Earle, NYR offer trial kits that contain mini versions of skincare products by range.

REN Skincare – Free ‘trial size’ samples available with every order.

Pai SkincareCustomisable trial packs available for just £3.50 postage. Each pack contains 4ml samples of 3 different facial products – two moisturisers and a cleanser.

Lucy RoseFree samples available with orders as follows: 3 samples with £10 or more, 4 free samples with £20 or more, 5 free samples with £30 or more. There’s a comprehensive list of products available with the only restriction being that you can’t add more than one sample of a particular product.

Big Green Smile – Pretty decent selection of free samples available. Two can be added to each order over £10 (before P&P is added).

Lovelula – Good selection of trial sizes available across a range of brands, all of which are natural and/or organic. You can also select 3 FREE samples with every order over a very reasonable £5 minimum spend.

Ophelia Organics – Free samples available with every order. Val Bogle, founder of OO, confirmed to me via Twitter that if customers have specific requests they will do their best to fulfil them.

Beauty Bazaar – Good range of skincare, perfume and cosmetics testers ranging from free samples to trial sizes retailing from 20p to £7.

Green beauty & financial management: PART 1 – Where to shop

It’s been just over three months since I started Natural Beauty Cabinet. Not ready for celebrating a birthday just yet, but long enough to have forgotten entirely what my life was like when I wasn’t glued to my laptop every evening or wandering into every beauty store/fete/emporium I pass in the name of research. Not that I’ve begrudged the time at all. The real issue – the one that’s required the most input and legwork – is the finances. Having been a bit of a beauty junkie for some time, spending ‘proper’ money on my skin isn’t a new thing. But recently it’s been quite a bit more than usual and that’s not good when you’re saving for a new house, a wedding AND a honeymoon.

I invest a lot of time in shopping around. While nothing beats an idle stroll through the beauty hall in John Lewis or an inspirational rummage in an independent boutique (The Hambledon in Winchester is one of my favourite recent discoveries), the reality of beauty shopping these days is that the best deals are usually to be found online. If you can track them down before you get “clicker’s knuckle”, that is (a new, laptop-based affliction that I’ve just made up and am, in all likelihood, suffering from).

Everyone loves a good deal and most of us are watching the pennies at the moment anyway. So I thought I’d share some of the fruits of my labours and highlight the sites that I rate, use regularly or have found on my internet odyssey.

I’ve added another page above to support this and will continue to update the information in the coming months. As ever, if you’ve got a favourite online store that you think should be featured, drop me a line at naturalbeautycabinet at yahoo.co.uk and let me know.

Oh and come back in a couple of days time for my part 2 post, which will be all about where to track down free and/or inexpensive samples.

Victoria Health – Excellent selection of products supported by truly helpful and informative advice. I do recommend signing up to the monthly newsletters to get an overview of the new launches and best-selling products, complete with friendly, approachable and trustworthy guidance. The site also includes a number of great guest writers (covering health, beauty, diet and exercise) and a host of articles making it a truly holistic emporium. Plus it has a permanent sale section which can be fun if you want to experiment with new things without spending a fortune. Plus free P&P on orders over £25.

Cheap Smells – If you can get past the name (I nearly couldn’t!), this is definitely worth the occasional look. It’s not brilliant for natural/organic brands but does feature Burt’s Bees, MOP and you can usually get excellent deals on Bio-Oil, which I’m a big fan of despite the inclusion of the dreaded mineral oil (paraffinum liquidum). Plus the prices now include UK delivery so you won’t pay extra for P&P.

EscentualAnother good site for a bit of a bargain, this one. It features more natural brands than Cheap Smells including the wonderful Caudalie, Snowberry, Tisserand, Trilogy and Vegetable Garden. Offers free delivery with orders over £40.

Aromatherapy Associates – Featured here because they offer free UK delivery. With the rise and rise of online shopping, I still find it surprising that more companies don’t.

Weleda – This is a nicely put together site but it’s featured here because it has a permanent offers page with a few rolling deals including 3 for 2s and other discount bundles.

Herbfarmacy – Again, these guys have a Special Offers page that allows you to get discounts by bundling.

REN Skincare – Become an account member and receive 10% off your favourite product every time you order it. Plus you can accumulate reward points for future discounts. A good option if you’re a regular shopper.

Peachykeen Organics – The Special Offer section of the site includes products that are nearing the end of their shelf life. These are available at a reduced rate but with between 2-5 months left before they expire, there’s no immediate rush to use them up and you could pick up a bargain.

Pai Skincare – Their Offers page includes bundled deals that are updated monthly, allowing you to save on your favourites.

Beauty Naturals - Good offers sections which are constantly updated. Look for the menu bar on the right-hand side, including Special Offers, Duo Offers and Clearance Offers. Also offers free delivery in the UK. I find this site quite interesting for experimenting without spending a fortune as it seems to offer a more eclectic selection of brands.

Beauty Bible – A comprehensive list of special discounts that the Beauty Bible ladies have arranged via a few different sites. Helpfully, it’s alphabetised by brand name and well worth checking out if you’re after a particular thing. You might just be able to save yourself between 5 and 10% if you go to the right site.

Lucy Rose – Monthly special offers on a great range of natural and organic products including Lavera, Green People and Madara.

My Pure – Another good Special Offers page with updated deals, free gifts with purchase and discounts.

Big Green Smile – Very comprehensive Special Offers section with lots of discounts and multi-buy options. Brands include Jason, Weleda, Avalon and Dr Bronner amongst many others.

Organic Skin store - Great Deals of the Week feature on the home page which usually covers at least 10 brands. Site also offers free UK delivery.

Ophelia Organics – Really attractive site with a permanent sale section. A great site to save money on Raw Gaia so do check here as well if you’re buying online. Also offers free UK delivery.

Beauty Bazaar – Regularly updated Special Offers, on a site that includes a lot of niche make-up brands.
